TSINDI Albert

Albert Tsindi is currently pursuing a PhD in Plant Breeding with West Africa Center for Crop Improvement, (WACCI), University of Ghana, Legon under a DAAD fellowship. His research will focus on breeding for earliness in soybean for South Africa. He holds an MSc in Crop Science (Genetics and Plant Breeding) from Makerere University, Uganda which he completed in 2017 through a Scholarship from Intra ACP-STREAM. In Uganda, he evaluated exotic vegetable soybean for stability and adaptation in 12 environments and assessed acceptability of vegetable soybean among farmers and consumers with the overall objective of introducing the nutritious and highly digestive vegetable soybean for cultivation in Uganda, for his MSc research. Albert also holds an MSc in Strategic Management from Chinhoyi University of Technology (CUT) were he researched on the applicability of the Peter’s Principle in Tertiary education institutions with reference to Mutare Polytechnic. His BSc honors degree in Agriculture (Crop Science) is from the University of Zimbabwe, which he completed in 2007. In 2014, he received a VLIR-OUS fellowship to attend a three weeks Summer Course on Modern Breeding Techniques for cassava at Ghent University, Belgium. Albert is an Accredited MBTI practitioner with the JVR Academy (South Africa) and is qualified to administer and train MBTI personality tests worldwide. Albert has co-authored and published 2 peer reviewed articles to date.

Albert has a passion in research and training and has over 10 years of working experience in research, training and community development. Currently, he is a trainer for African Woman in Agriculture Research and Development (AWARD) which is based in Kenya. For AWARD he is responsible for training leaders from 11 African countries from Agricultural Research Institutions and Tertiary Education Institutions (Universities, Polytechnics and Colleges) in Leadership and Science Skill courses. To date, he has trained more than 300 leaders across Africa. Whilst at Makerere University in Uganda, he worked as a research assistant for the National Soybean Breeding program which also hosted his MSc research from 2013 to 2015. From 2008 to 2013, Albert worked with the Ministry of Higher and Tertiary Education of Zimbabwe as a Lecturer at Mutare Polytechnic in the Department of Horticulture where he taught mainly genetics and plant breeding, introduction to horticulture, Floriculture and plant protection as courses. More than 200 students passed through his hands. During that period, he also worked with the government and other private organizations in community outreach programs aiming at equipping farming communities with self-sustenance skills and he trained community groups in poultry farming, oyster mushroom production, potato, tomato production and several other horticultural crops.

His focus going forward is to be a leading breeder able to nurture, train and mentor the next generation of breeders and contribute to the release of cultivars suited for African environments to meet the ever-changing demands of humans, overcome biotic and abiotic stresses prevalent in these environments and subsequently contributing to a food and nutrition secure Africa.
