WACCI Student Awarded Norman E. Borlaug LEAP Fellowship

Ms. Ijeoma Chinyere Akaogu, a third year PhD in Plant Breeding student of the West Africa Centre for Crop Improvement (WACCI), has been selected as a Fellow of the Norman E. Borlaug Leadership Enhancement in Agriculture Programme (LEAP) of the United States Government’s “Feed the Future Borlaug 21st Century Leadership Initiative”.

 

The Norman E. Borlaug Leadership Enhancement in Agriculture Program (Borlaug LEAP) awards fellowships to outstanding graduate students who show strong promise as leaders in the field of agriculture and related disciplines. The Borlaug LEAP Fellowship honours Dr. Norman Borlaug whose distinguished career epitomized the qualities of leadership, scholarship, scientific achievement, international cooperation, mentoring and passion.

 

Miss Akaogu is a senior scientific officer with the Department of Agricultural Biotechnology, National Biotechnology Development Agency Abuja. She is currently working on “Combining ability, Heterosis and Identification of Quantitative Traits Loci (QTLs) for Striga Resistance in Early Maize Hybrids under Stress and Non-stress environments” for her PhD thesis at the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA).
