The West Africa Centre for Crop Improvement (WACCI) on Friday, July 22, 2016, graduated its fourth cohort of PhD students in Plant Breeding at the July congregation of the University of Ghana, Legon. The ceremony was presided over by Justice Prof. Samuel K. Date-Bah, Chairman of Council of the University. The graduates who were made up of 3 male and 4 female students from 6 countries in Africa will join 28 other students who have already graduated from the Centre.

Students of the West Africa Centre for Crop Improvement (WACCI) have participated in an international symposium organized by The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations from February 15-17, 2016 in Rome. The Econet Foundation has awarded a USD 600,000 grant to the West Africa Centre for Crop Improvement (WACCI) for the training of 10 PhD students who recently enrolled in the flagship PhD programme in Plant Breeding at the University of Ghana. The students, who are from nine countries in West, East and Southern Africa, will be equipped with knowledge and skills in modern plant breeding to work towards transforming agriculture in their countries.

A three-day orientation programme has been held for the 2016 doctoral students enrolled on the PhD Plant Breeding Programme of the West Africa Centre for Crop Improvement (WACCI). The 2016 graduate students, who are so far, the largest cohort enrolled on the programme, are from 9 African countries namely Niger, Sierra Leone, South Sudan, Malawi, Togo, Ethiopia, Ghana, Liberia and Burkina Faso.
