Thirteen students from the West Africa Centre for Crop Improvement (WACCI) have graduated with doctoral degrees in Plant Breeding from the University of Ghana on February 10, 2026, at the Great Hall of the University of Ghana.

The graduating class included five females and eight males from six African countries: Ethiopia, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Ghana, Kenya, Nigeria, and Uganda.

Through years of rigorous research and training, the graduates have developed innovative solutions to improve agricultural productivity and sustainability across the continent. Their research on maize, mungbean, common bean, cassava, rice, cowpea, Urochloa (forage grass), and tomato is expected to make substantial contributions to advancing agriculture and food security in their respective countries and across Africa.

Since its establishment in 2007, WACCI has consistently demonstrated its commitment to academic excellence. The Centre has evolved into one of the world’s largest PhD education programmes, gaining recognition as a leading Centre of Excellence in agricultural innovation and entrepreneurship.

The latest cohorts of WACCI graduates bring the total to 133 PhD degrees awarded to students from 15 African countries.

WACCI congratulates all the graduates on their remarkable achievements.
