Dr. Mawulawoe Awity, researcher at the West Africa Centre for Crop Improvement (WACCI), University of Ghana, has been named one of the Seed Grant winners in the fifth annual Seeding The Future Global Food System Challenge.
Hosted by Welthungerhilfe (WHH) and funded by the Seeding The Future Foundation (STF), the Challenge recognizes and supports innovations that have the potential to transform global food systems, particularly in addressing critical challenges facing communities in the Global South.
Dr. Awity was selected among eight Seed Grant winners worldwide and will receive USD 25,000 for her project, “Advancing Climate-Resilient Maize for Smallholder Farmers in Ghana.”
The project focuses on validating maize hybrids that can better withstand drought and low soil fertility conditions while improving nutritional quality.
Through multi-location field trials and participatory evaluations with farmers, the project seeks to identify farmer-preferred, climate-smart maize varieties that can contribute to improved food security, nutrition, and livelihoods for smallholder farming communities in Ghana.
This recognition highlights WACCI’s continued commitment to advancing innovative agricultural research, training the next generation of plant breeders, and developing practical solutions that contribute to resilient food systems and improved livelihoods across Africa.
WACCI congratulates Dr. Awity on this outstanding achievement.
