The West Africa Centre for Crop Improvement (WACCI), a partnership between the University of Ghana (UG) and Cornell University, USA was established in June 2007 with funding from the Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa (AGRA) to train Plant Breeders in a PhD programme at the University of Ghana. In 2008, the Centre obtained funding from the Generation Challenge Programme (GCP) to train additional students. Currently, the Programme has students from Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Ghana, Kenya, Niger, Nigeria, Mali and Senegal. WACCI is based on the successful model of the African Centre for Crop Improvement (ACCI), University of Kwazulu- Natal, South Africa. This model is based on the premise that we can train African Plant Breeders in Africa, working on African crops in African environments.
