Celebrating 17 Years of Excellence at the West Africa Centre for Crop Improvement (WACCI)

This June, we celebrate a remarkable milestone—the 17th anniversary of the West Africa Centre for Crop Improvement (WACCI) at the University of Ghana. From its inception in June 2007, WACCI has grown into one of Africa's leading institutions for plant breeding education at the PhD level and a shining example of excellence in training Africans for Africa.

 

CGIAR Explores Collaboration with WACCI

Prof. John Derera, Senior Director of Plant Breeding and Pre-Breeding at the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR), recently paid a working visit to the West Africa Centre for Crop Improvement (WACCI) to explore potential areas of collaboration between WACCI and the CGIAR.

Dr. Ronnie Coffman to Chair WACCI’s ISAB

Dr. Ronnie Coffman, International Professor Emeritus of Plant Breeding and Genetics, Cornell University, has replaced Dr. Eugene Terry, Senior Technical Advisor, TransFarm Africa as Chairman of the International Scientific Advisory Board (ISAB) of the West Africa Centre for Crop Improvement (WACCI).

WACCI Student Wins Tony Elumelu Foundation Grants

Ms. Maryann Chinasa Ezeh, a student of the West Africa Centre for Crop Improvement (WACCI), University of Ghana, has won a grant from the Tony Elumelu Foundation Mentorship Programme to establish an agribusiness.

Prof. Tongoona

Professor Pangirayi Tongoona, Plant Breeding Consultant and Associate Director for Breeding Programmes, West Africa Centre for Crop Improvement (WACCI) University of Ghana, has been reappointed as an Honorary Professor in the School of Agricultural, Earth, and Environmental Sciences at the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN), South Africa, from 1st July 2023 to 30th June 2026. He was initially appointed as an Honorary Professor of the same university from July 2014 to June 2023.

High-Level Stakeholder Meeting

Following 16 years of impactful research and training of African agricultural scientists, partners have reignited passion for furthering their work with the launch of WACCI 3.0. This renewed commitment will see partners of the West Africa Centre for Crop Improvement at the University of Ghana commit a colossal investment of resources over the next decade to training farmers and researchers.

The President of 2Blades Foundation

A delegation led by the President and Co-Founder of 2Blades Foundation Dr. Diana Hovarth will visit the West Africa Centre Crop Improvement (WACCI), University of Ghana from March 13 to 14, 2024 to explore strategic collaboration for agricultural development.

 

2Blades is a charitable organization dedicated to plant science innovations to combat crop diseases by collaborating with leading scientists to advance understanding and develop disease-resistant crops.

International Women’s Day

As the world celebrates International Women’s Day, it’s a moment to honour women's achievements and recommit to advancing gender equality.

 

This year's theme, 'Inspire Inclusion,' highlights the importance of creating spaces where women are fully embraced, empowered, and valued, urging individuals to acknowledge and value the unique perspectives and contributions of women from all backgrounds.
